CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Summer Academy 2010

One-week Session #1 (Monday, June 14-Friday, June 18, 2010)

Clown College-5-9 years
Polly Pocket the mommy clown will show you its fun to be funny! You will learn how to do clown makeup and create clown clothes. You will become an expert at silly stunts like mini stilts and tumbling. When you graduate from Clown College you will be ready to join the circus. Family and friends will be invited to see little clowns perform on the last day of class.

Magic and Juggling Camp-10-14 years

Magic Camp
Do you know any good magic tricks? After this week you will. Professional magician Dan J. will teach the basics of magic with coins, cards and other everyday objects you can find around your house. Learn how to make them disappear, appear, change places, grow and all sorts of fun magic. Amaze your friends and family by the end of the week.

Juggling Camp

Juggling isn’t as hard as it looks. Can you throw? Can you catch? The trick is just putting them together. Dan J. has been juggling for almost 20 years and has taught all kinds of people to juggle. We will mostly focus on juggling balls, but there will be plenty of opportunities to try rings, clubs, yoyos, diabolos and various juggling toys. We’ll put on a good juggling show on the last day of camp.

Two- Week Session #2 (Monday, June 21-Friday, June 25 & Monday, June 28-Friday, July 2, 2010)

2-4 YEAR OLDS

Imagination Station, Creative dramatics for little tots 2-4 years
Come join us in the wonderful world of make-believe. You will tell time by a magic clock that tells you when to take a trip, cook, dance, sing, or make art. You will spin the adventure spinner to discover whether you will be traveling by rocket, boat, bus or train. Every Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday a time when both classes join together and enjoy a themed party day. Encourage your little actor to use their imagination. Family and friends are welcome to visit at Imagination Station any time!

5-7 YEAR OLDS

Stagecraft Jr
Do you think you might enjoy working behind the scenes? Take this class to learn more about technical theatre. This hands on class will teach you how to do easy stage makeup, experiment with costumes in the dress up box and learn to paint on a mural. You will also take a tour of the Mary Godfrey Playhouse to see how everything works behind the curtain. Family and friends are invited to see everything we have learned including a tour of the theater.

I Hope You Dance, Creative Movement for Little Dancing Feet
Your child will play acting games, learn simple choreography and use Dance Theater to perform popular stories from children’s books. There will be a culminating performance for friends and families on the last day of class.

Pirate Camp
“Shiver me timbers” Come live the pirate life! Pirates will make maps, token pouches, and pirate clothes. You will find hidden treasure, play capture the flag, pick out a pirate name and create a pirate ship to sail the seven seas.

8-10 YEAR OLDS

Stagecraft
Become a vital part of the back stage crew. Learn how to work the curtain, call a show, pull costumes, make a prop table and pull props and paint a realistic looking fence on a flat surface. Friends and family are invited to take a tour of the theater guided by students of this class.

Musical Theater Jr.
In this camp you will learn two Musical Theatre production numbers. You will create a character with stage make-up, and personal props. You can become a triple threat: singer, dancer and actor. Invite your family and friends to a performance on the last day where you can “Strut your stuff!”

Radio Drama
Did you know that before television was invented families listen to plays on the radio? You will produce a radio drama by learning how to do a variety of voices, make and operate sound effects and rehearse and be part of the a final production. Help keep radio drama from going extinct.

11-15 YEAR OLDS

Stagecraft
Do you think you might enjoy working behind the scenes? That is technical theater. You will learn how to paint a flat, design a floor plan and set, research and design a period costume. You will learn how to be a stage manager and call a show and learn how the light board works. Become part of this talented troop of techies. Without technical theater no show would ever open.

Musical Theater Sr.
Do you want to get great roles when you audition for musicals? We will teach you the skills you need to prepare an audition song, learn choreography, and learn how to use your voice and body in a wide variety of ways. Through acting games you will learn how to create rich and interesting characters on stage. You will sing your audition song for your number one fans, family and friends on the last day of camp.

Radio Drama and Script Adaptation
Before the golden age of television everyone listened to Radio Dramas for entertainment. Keep this amazing art form alive by adapting a television script for radio. Create and operate sound effects, learn character voices, and write commercials for the radio. Rehearse your original radio drama and be part of the premier of an original Radio Drama.

Two-week session #3 (Monday, July 12-Friday, July 16 & Monday, July 19-Friday, July 23, 2010)

2-4 YEAR OLDS

Fairy & Wizard Camp
Enter the mysterious world of Fairies and Wizards. Come and dance around the magic stone circle, create Fairy wings or Wizard caps. Learn Fairy songs and dances. Everyday you will search for magical eggs and read a message from the Fairies written in the magic book. You will make lots of fun Fairy and Wizard crafts and play fairy and wizard games. Friends and families will be invited to visit our Magical Fairy and Wizard world on the last day of camp.

Puppetry Jr.
In this first puppetry class, children will learn how to work hand puppets, use a puppet theater, and make simple puppets out of popular household throw-aways and popular art supplies. The children will also learn about theater terms and theater etiquette culminating in a production for family and friends.

Fractured Fables and Storytelling
Have you ever heard of the story “Goldilocks and the sleeping tortoise and the hare? In this imaginative class students will learn that a story has a beginning, middle and end. The students will go on story scavenger hunts, create new fables through mixing and matching beginning, middle and ends of traditional fables. Student actors will use props and a dress up box to complete their original plays. Friends and family are invited to see a performance of one of the Fractured Fables on the last day of class.

8-10 YEAR OLDS

Dance Theater
You will learn all the terms and techniques to become a musical theater dancer. You will be exposed to conditioning, dance terms, dance styles and choreography. Each student will learn how to create a short dance and teach it to the class. The class will culminate in a dance performance with family and friends on the last day of class.

Puppetry Construction and Performance
In this class students will create 4 puppets and 4 puppet theaters of different styles and sizes; from shadow puppets to marionettes. After creating each beautiful and original puppet you will practice working them to perform fun puppet plays. Your family and friends will be invited to see you perform on the last day of class.

Don’t Be Scared; Be Prepared Audition preparation
Do you have an audition in your future? We will help you prepare to shine. In this class you will learn how to deal with nerves, how to do cold readings, how to listen and react on stage and improve vocal projection. You will be doing lots of auditions to gain experience. The teacher and your classmates will give you feedback and helpful hints. On the last day the students will teach families and friends what they have learned about auditioning.

11-15 YEAR OLDS

Advanced Dance Theater
Do you like to dance? Have you taken dance classes before? Learn how to enhance your dancing skills by learning new conditioning skills, dance terms, and dance styles. Learn about Dance Theater and create an original Dance Theater piece that will be student choreographed and performed for family and friends on the last day of class.

Master Puppetry
This puppet class will challenge students to research the different types of Puppet Theater produced all over the world. Each student will choose 2 countries and create a puppet from that part of the world as well as creating the unique performance style from that country. Students will also create giant 8 foot puppets that will require all of the class members to operate them on the Mary Godfrey Playhouse stage at a performance for family and friends.

Audition Like a Pro
Take this great class and get cast in your dream role! It is easy when you know how to do it. Learn how to project, do accents, do cold readings and control your nerves. You will also learn how to pick an audition piece that fits you. After you conquer these auditioning skills you be ready for any type of audition and performance whether it be a straight play, a musical, or speech and debate.

One-week session #4 (Monday, August 2-Monday, August 9, 2010)

Melodrama Jr.

This is a SPECIAL invitation for an INTENSE experience for INTENSELY talented kids! We need 15 bright actors and actresses for a whirlwind theatrical experience. We’ll prepare the zany musical melodrama, “Beware the Shutterbugs” also known as “The Shady Shenanigans of Venus Flytrap”, which we will perform on the Atlas Stage on August 9th. Besides memorizing lines, songs, and dances; besides crafting costumes and set pieces; we will be learning a lot about acting and about telling a story through voice and movement! Space is LIMITED! Rehearsals run 9:00 am-12:00 pm, Monday ,August 2nd through Friday , August 6th, with afternoon rehearsals on Saturday, August 7th and Sunday, August 8th.


TEACHER BIOS

JANAÉ BERNHARD-Janaé moved to Cheyenne from Oklahoma City in June 2008 when her husband Randy accepted the position of Managing & Artistic Director of Cheyenne Little Theatre. Janaé has been a vocal coach and voice teacher for over 20 years. Janaé loves the theatre and has extensive experience as an actress, director and art educator. Janaé works for Youth Alternatives with an office housed in Johnson Jr. High where her specialty is art-infused programming. Janaé has been married to her best friend for 32 years. They have three grown children and three amazing grandchildren, all of them incredibly creative in their own rights. In her spare time Janaé likes to write children’s shows, write music, play the piano and make things like jewelry, paintings, sewing and knitting, knitting, knitting. Janaé wants to thank everyone at the Cheyenne Little Theatre who has made her feel welcome and needed.

ANDI JASPERSEN- is relatively new to the Cheyenne Little Theatre but is no stranger to the theatre. With over 14 years of theatrical experience and nearly 40 shows under her belt (including It’s a Wonderful Life and Rabbit Hole with CLTP), she is excited to be coordinating the summer academy this year. Andi graduated with a B.A. in Communication from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. She then moved to Japan with her husband where they taught English and did international relations for four years. After moving to Cheyenne in the summer of 2009 with their young son, she got a job working as an event planner for Tula Event Productions and dove back into the theatre scene with CLTP. Drawing from both on-stage and technical experience, she looks forward to encouraging the youth of Cheyenne to plunge into theatre and grow as thespians!

DAN JASPERSEN- hails from Minnesota where he grew up and graduated from Bethany Lutheran in Mankato. He taught himself to juggle at the age of eleven (with one broken arm!) and began studying magic while a college student. He has over 10 years of performance experience, including in Japan, Brazil, and Cambodia. He’s excited to be back in the states and has made the shift from Coordinator for International Relations for Misato, Japan, to full-time professional magician (Magician@Play) quite well. While not mystifying and amazing spectators, he enjoys his new life out west with his wife and toddler and is thrilled to be a part of this summer’s academy teaching staff.

KARI KONTOUR-Kari was born and raised in Wyoming. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Dance at the University of Wyoming. She has 15 years of experience in theatre. Currently floating between the Equality State and the Windy City and finding her place in the real world, Kari is excited to find herself back in the fold at CLTP. She has been in several Theatre for Youth productions including acting in The Jungle Book, Alicia in Wonder Tierra, and assistant directing CLTP's Many Moons. And with almost as many technical credits as in acting, Kari is at home on any side of the curtain. She knows what Cheyenne has to offer the world of theatre, and she is honored to be a part of its growth.

JILL LAPING-Jill has a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She also has several hours towards a Masters of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Central Missouri State University. Jill has served as the musical director and/or pianist for several Cheyenne Little Theatre Players musical productions. She also has served as a church pianist & organist for several area churches over the past 22 years. She is certified Private Suzuki Piano Instructor and is a preschool and instrumental instructor at St. Mary’s Catholic School.

RORY MACK-Rory is a reading instructor at East High School, and is the former Outreach Coordinator for Cheyenne Little Theatre. This is his fourth year teaching for the CLTP Theatre Academy. He has been involved in over 30 CLTP productions over the last eight years, both onstage and off as an actor, director, writer, and stage hand, including directing the children’s production Pinocchio, Nunsense!, and The Old Fashioned Melodrama. Besides his involvement in the theatre, he also teaches pre-school Sunday school at his church, sings in the praise band and fights bad guys with his five year old son Carson.

CINDY MCCOLLOM-Cynthia was raised in the Cheyenne Little Theater. She has been involved with it for many years now dancing, singing and doing costumes. She is getting her BA from the University of Wyoming in Education with an area in creative arts. She loves working with children and has been doing so since she was in Junior High School. She loves the theater and teaching and hopes one day that she will be teaching in Cheyenne.

OLIVIA SCHON-Originally from Atlanta, Olivia has been a resident of Cheyenne for almost 6 years now. She has starred in several roles for the CLTP: The Narrator in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” and Marion the Librarian in “The Music Man”. Olivia owns a wedding planning and reception designing business. But, she mostly keeps busy with two boys, Owen and Everett, and her husband, Kai.

PAULA EGAN-WRIGHT- Paula teachers French at East High and LCCC, as well as theater, watercolor , and language classes at summer camps for kids. She has taught CTA classes since the academy started, and has directed over a dozen major theater productions for children at CLTP. In addition, her French students annually put on a play with French kids in Paris in the spring. in addition to a teacher, Paula is also a mother, an artist, a musician, an athlete, a writer, and a current member of the CLTP board.

Goals of Theatre Education Program

  1. To offer consistent and focused management of the theatre education programs of CLTP through hiring a full time Theatre Education Coordinator.
  2. To provide theatre education opportunities and training for learners of all ages.
  3. To provide systematic training for elementary and junior high school-aged children through year-round classes, workshops and training.
  4. To provide more performance opportunities for elementary and junior high school-aged children through producing a fall play and winter play each season for that age group.
  5. To attract younger audiences for CLTP productions and events (children and their parents).
  6. To provide learning opportunities for high school and college students through serving as interns with teachers and taking adult theatre classes.
  7. To continually enhance the artistic quality of what we do through on-going education and training of our volunteers.
  8. To increase existing education revenue streams and to develop & implement new ones.
