What is an Olio Act?
An olio act is a short variety act, usually lasting around three minutes, that is performed between acts at the Old-Fashioned Melodrama. During past Melodramas, these acts have consisted of singers, dancers, musicians, acrobats, magicians, comedians, and animal trainers. If you have a skill, Rory Mack can help you turn it into an Olio Act. If you want to learn a new skill, Dan Jaspersen can help you with that.
What is the Old-Fashioned Melodrama?
Now in its 68th year, the Old-Fashioned Melodrama is a comic western play where the Villain and Villainess try to bamboozle the Heroine and her Sidekick. Usually the Hero and his Sidekick try to save the Heroine, but she often figures out how to escape the Villain on her own. The acting in the Old-Fashioned Melodrama is always way over the top and there is no such thing as too big or too melodramatic in this show. Come take part in the fun! Auditions for the Old-Fashioned Melodrama are on May 20 and 22 at the Atlas Theater. Auditions for Can-Can Dancers, MCs, Card Girls and Guys, and Sheriffs are on May 23 at the Atlas Theater. See www.cheyennelittletheatre.org for more information.
Who are the MC, Card Girl/Guy, and Sheriff?
The MC ties the entire Old-Fashioned Melodrama together, by telling about the history of Cheyenne and the Atlas Theater, cracking jokes, introducing upcoming Olio Acts, and interacting with the audience. The MC is lively and good at thinking on their feet. The Sheriff makes the audience deliver the Melodrama Oath, teases the audience, makes sure law(ish) and order(ish) abide, and haul audience members to the Atlas Lobby Jail if they get too rowdy. The Card Girl (or Guy) uses cue cards to announce what is coming next in the Old-Fashioned Melodrama. The Card Girl (Guy) is the MC’s partner and they crack jokes, interact with the audience, and think on their feet. The Card Girl (Guy) is often portrayed as ditzy, but other gimmicks work, too.
